How to handle the iPhone addiction

I have always been passionate about technology and fancy gadgets, and after some time I decided to get an iPhone( finally!) I think that we all agree that is an awesome tool. However, I found myself spending around 20 hours this week playing around with it when I was supposed to make things easier.

The big issue in my case is that I bought my iPhone looking to gain in performance and time for my business, since it would allow me to reply mails, calls, and keep my stuff organized and always be available when I am out of station. But I ended up being less productive and playing Tap Tap Revenge 3 for an embarrassing number of hours.

Like Jeffrey Way detailed on his “The Curse of Availability” article; on one hand you are always available for any important email or information you may be expecting, but on the other hand you get abruptly captive of the iPhone’s greatness and its useless(ful) applications.

Before I get to a point of “no coming back” I decided to apply few reasonable actions on my daily basis, to avoid that kind of situations.

  1. Learn how to use the turn off button, and when to use it. Why spending time with a device when I am supposed to be with your relatives or enjoying a good movie?
  2. Only install the necessary apps; do I really need to have Facebook or twitterrific apps installed? (those are extremely time-consuming and is better to access from the office instead).
  3. Think about if you are doing something stupid when you use your iPhone. (The other day I was on my office answering a mail from the iPhone…ugh)

This shouldn’t be too complicated to do, actually I tried it these past two days and stopped “miraculously” buying useless apps from the AppStore.

Anyway, this is what’s been working for me to avoid the iPhone addiction.
